Top Cat Films has a policy of giving back a share of our profits to the community and for its first film, PREY; the charity we have selected is the Victorian Country Fire Authority, staffed mainly by volunteers who risk their lives to keep others safe. The 2009 bushfires in Victoria destroyed nearly two thousand homes, and killed nearly 200 people, as well as countless livestock and wild life. It was the biggest disaster in Australia’s history. Individuals and companies dug deep to aid the survivors, but a country with a population of only 21 million people cannot raise what is needed to buy the Elvis helicopters needed for modern-day fire-fighting in this country. There is only one Elvis helicopter in Victoria and four in the entire country. In a country suffering from a decade of drought, we need at least 15. There are many moving stories arising out of those devastating bushfires, but none as heart-warming as that of Sam the koala.

A bewildered and badly burned koala, now known as Sam, is comforted by CFA volunteer David Tree. Thirsty and with 2nd and 3rd degree burns on her paws, she overcomes her fear to allow David to give her some water. (Sam recovered from her burns but died in August 2009 from Chlamydia, the life-threatening disease which affects many of Australia’s koalas.)
